Privacy Policy

Your journal. Your data.

A plain-English explanation of how Red works, what we collect, and who else is involved.

Red is a journaling app. The things you share with it can be personal, difficult, and intimate. We take that seriously — and we think you deserve a clear, honest account of how your data is handled rather than a document designed to obscure it.

This page covers what Red collects, how your conversations are processed, and the role Anthropic plays as the AI provider behind Red.

What Red collects

Red collects the minimum needed to provide the service:

  • Account information — your email address and a hashed password.
  • Conversation content — the messages you exchange with Red during journaling sessions.
  • Journal entries — the summaries Red generates after each session.
  • Memory context — themes and patterns Red retains between sessions to provide continuity.
  • Basic usage data — session timestamps and app version, used to maintain the service.

We do not collect your location, contacts, or any data from other apps on your device.

Red is powered by Anthropic

Red is powered by Anthropic, a carefully selected third party AI service provider. When you have a conversation in Red, your messages are sent to Anthropic's API to generate responses. This means Anthropic processes your conversation content as part of delivering the service.

Anthropic was specifically chosen as Red's AI provider because of their strong stance on data privacy and security — particularly important given the deeply personal nature of journaling conversations.

What Anthropic commits to under their API terms:

  • They do not train their models on your conversations by default.
  • API data is not used to improve Anthropic's products without explicit consent.
  • They will never sell your data to third parties.
  • Data is retained only as long as necessary to provide the service.

Our goal is to establish a zero data retention agreement with Anthropic, which would mean conversation data is not stored on their systems at all. Until that is in place, data is retained only as long as required to deliver the service, up to a maximum of 30 days.

You can read Anthropic's Privacy Policy in full on their website.

Encryption & security

All data in transit between your device, Red's servers, and Anthropic's API is encrypted using TLS. Your journal entries and conversation history are stored encrypted at rest.

Red will never sell your data to third parties, share it with advertisers, or use it for purposes other than providing you with the journaling service.

Your rights

You have the right to:

  • Access all data Red holds about you.
  • Export your journal entries and conversation history at any time.
  • Delete your account and all associated data permanently.
  • Opt out of any optional data collection.

When you delete your account, your data is removed from Red's systems within 30 days. Note that Anthropic's data retention policies, described in their Privacy Policy, govern any data held on their side.
